Masonry and fire protection

Protection from fires with suitable masonry

Year after year losses in the millions occur in buildings due to fires. In many cases, people are also killed, in addition to those who are seriously injured.

The existing fire protection regulations are not focused on property protection, but only on compliance with public safety regulations. The legal regulation with regard to fire safety leaves it to the discretion of the developer to install safe or less safe building materials. Therefore flammable, even easily inflammable building materials can still be used today.

While today essentially only the increased thermal protection, noise protection and the equipment level of the apartment buildings and low priced houses is in the forefront, fire protection is often neglected. The clients limit themselves to complying with the legal public requirements, i.e. the minimum technical fire protection specifications of the building authority:

  • Prevention of fire creation and expansion,
  • Rescue of people and animals,
  • Effective firefighting.

These regulations are only intended to ensure that persons, including firefighters, are not endangered outside and inside the building and buildings in the neighbourhood. They do not aim to minimise the damage and the follow-up costs to the building. In case of fire there is therefore the threat of large asset losses.

When selecting the building materials you should always pay attention to the non-combustibility of the building materials, and not be satisfied with the note regarding the regulations by the building authority. Furthermore, the premiums for fire insurance for buildings made of non-combustible building materials are clearly lower than for flammable building materials. All KLB products are non-combustible. They safely protect people and animals as well as possessions.

The requirements by the building authority regarding fire protection are defined in the state building regulations and supplemented by ordinances, administrative regulations and guidelines.

These requirements concern mostly components like walls and ceilings. For walls they are distinguished with regard to their task (bearing wall, apartment separation wall, building separation wall). For buildings they are distinguished by their normal type and usage (apartment building and building with similar usage) and special type and usage (gathering places, hospitals, industrial building).
